Coal company would pay $575,000 in water-quality reporting lawsuit

To resolve penalties for improper water-quality monitoring, International Coal Group, one of Kentucky's largest surface mining companies, has agreed in principle to pay $575,000 toward ridding homes of illegal "straight pipe" sewage discharges and assessing the impact of surface mining on waterways.
